Nablus

Nablus, Cisgiordania, capoluogo del distretto omonimo, 50 km a N di Gerusalemme, a 570 m sulle pendici meridionali del monte ‘Eval. È mercato agricolo e sede di piccole industrie alimentari, tessili, chimiche, dei materiali da costruzione e dei fiammiferi. Splendidamente situata tra le panoramiche montagne di Gerizim ed Ebal, Nablus è la città più grande della Cisgiordania: una tipica cittadina araba, molto animata, con un incantevole centro storico. Il profilo di Nablus è punteggiato da 30 minareti: uno dei più suggestivi appartiene alla Moschea An-Nasir. A breve distanza dalla moschea troverete il Castello Touqan, una vecchia residenza turca; sebbene appartenga a privati, vi dovrebbero permettere di dare un’occhiata al giardino e all’architettura esterna. A est della moschea c’è il più antico bagno turco ancora funzionante del paese: costruito intorno al 1480, il delizioso bagno restaurato ha una sala dei vapori, una sala per i massaggi e un’altra centrale dove potete adagiarvi sui cuscini mentre sorseggiate caffè nero o tè alla menta. Maschi e femmine non possono accedere al bagno negli stessi orari. Si arriva a Nablus in autobus o con un taxi collettivo da Gerusalemme est.Fu fondata con il nome di Flavia Neapolis da Tito nel 72 d.C. nelle vicinanze dell’antica Sichem. All’epoca delle Crociate (nel Medioevo fu chiamata Napluso) fu spesso al centro dei conflitti tra cristiani e musulmani. Subì gravi danni nel 1834 quando venne conquistata dagli Egiziani. Nel 1918 fu presa da Allenby. Nel 1949 fu annessa alla Giordania, ma dal giugno 1967 è amministrata da Israele, che la occupa militarmente con l’intero distretto. In arabo, Nabulus. Il distretto di Nablus (2510 km²; 427.000 ab.), confinante con Israele, si estende a W del fiume Giordano ed è percorso da una catena di rilievi culminanti a 940 m nel monte ‘Eval. Agricoltura (cereali, agrumi, datteri) e allevamento. Centro importante, oltre al capoluogo, è Jenin.
